Since 1996, the United States Food and Drug Administration (US-FDA) has recognized the use of a liquid solution as a suitable alternative to traditional methods for studying Pap smears. This method involves the direct transfer of cervical cells into a specialized buffer, creating a well-mixed sample and overcoming the limitations of traditional approaches, such as small sample sizes, the presence of cell clumps, and interference from mucus.
Liquid-based cytology (LBC) Pap smear packages have been used in Europe and America for many years as a screening method to detect infections, inflammations, fungal and parasitic diseases, and to identify dangerous cervical viruses such as HPV and HSV.
